pace - a trauma informed approach

Embracing Connection with PACE: A Transformative Approach to Relationships

At The Willows Child Development, we proudly integrate the groundbreaking PACE approach developed by Dr. Dan Hughes into our therapeutic practices. PACE, an acronym for Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, and Empathy, is a relational framework designed to nurture secure attachments and facilitate healing for children and young people who have experienced trauma or challenges in their lives.

The Four Pillars of PACE:

  1. Playfulness: In the spirit of play, we create an environment where joy, spontaneity, and laughter thrive. Playfulness fosters a sense of safety and connection, allowing children to express themselves freely and build positive associations with relationships.

 2. Acceptance: PACE emphasizes unconditional acceptance, recognizing and validating the emotions and experiences of each individual. By providing a non-judgmental space, we empower children to feel seen and heard, laying the foundation for trust and emotional security.

3. Curiosity: Cultivating a curious mindset allows us to understand the unique perspectives and needs of each child. Through open-ended questions and genuine interest, we embark on a shared journey of exploration, uncovering the layers of their experiences and fostering a sense of agency.

4. Empathy: Central to the PACE approach is the practice of deep empathy. By attuning ourselves to the emotional states of children, we create a responsive and compassionate space. Empathy forms the bridge that connects us to the core emotions of each child, fostering a sense of belonging and emotional regulation.

Why PACE Matters:

  • Healing Relationships: PACE serves as a powerful tool for healing relational wounds. Through the cultivation of secure attachments, children and young people can experience relationships as sources of comfort, safety, and support.

  • Trauma-Informed Care: Informed by trauma research, PACE provides a trauma-sensitive framework that acknowledges and addresses the impact of adverse experiences. It allows us to meet children where they are in their healing journey, offering tailored support and understanding.

  • Building Resilience: PACE equips individuals with the emotional tools needed to navigate life's challenges. By fostering resilience and emotional regulation, we empower children to face adversity with confidence and adaptability.

Experience the Power of Connection:

Join us in embracing the PACE approach as we journey together towards healing, connection, and growth. At The Willows Child Development, we are committed to providing a nurturing environment where every child can experience the transformative power of secure, connected relationships.
